Special Feature - Rider Interview

BM: The rider was Bryce Lopez from France. I’d seen him crash at the start of the race in Moto 1.We were both going for the same line into the splits and he just barely pinched me off and went too hard into a left turn and flew off his ski. I did notice he still managed to hang on to the bars. There were three laps to go in the race and I felt someone breathing down my neck, I was in third place at the time. It was Bryce and once again we were going for the same line, this time I almost crashed because of it. I couldn’t help but notice his shorts were down around his ankles, it was both amusing and amazing to see someone with that much determination late in the race wearing their birthday suit.

WC:  One last question, and I’ll try and put you on the spot.  Is there anything about watercross racing specifically from a riders standpoint that you would like to see changed to improve the sport of PWC Racing?

BM:  One change would be to expand the race site locations to all corners of the region. I have noticed this problem in the three regions I have raced in. The races are generally in one particular area of the region, so many surrounding states don’t have any PWC racing at all. Either we add more regions to accommodate this problem or we start putting races on in those other states in order to expose our sport across the board.

In the ‘90’s PWC racing had plenty of outside sponsorship support and had a large scale National Tour which was regularly seen on ESPN. PWC racing is currently experiencing some growing pains. It’s just a matter of time until our Sport gets in the spotlight again. Once the current sanctioning decisions have been made, we must re-approach outside sponsors again. PWC Manufactures should also get serious about the racing aspect of our sport again. In my opinion, they have not paid enough attention to racing. Marketed correctly, they could help get a lot of people in the sport.

If the general public is more exposed to PWC racing, the sport will gain the popularity and attention it deserves. ~
